This PK-8 school serves an economically disadvantaged community (100% FRL) in Cleveland, OH.  High rates of transiency and chronic absenteeism result in a wide range of academic levels and student needs in every classroom.

Selected by the district to participate in a school redesign program, Charles Eliot committed to "personalized learning" as its core strategy for raising achievement.  Empowering students to drive their own learning is a means of both engaging their students as active learners and enabling teachers to support a range of needs.  To transform learning school-wide, the school designed, tested and refined a PL prototype in an initial cohort of classrooms, before rolling it out to successive cohorts over three years.

Building Blocks Support:  We provided a comprehensive school redesign program, including a series of instructional design workshops, protocols for program evaluation and continuous improvement, and regular on-site coaching for teachers and administrators.

KEY ELEMENTS OF MODEL

  • Strategic Planning.  Six-year plan defined PL vision, core practices & cohort rollout plan.

  • School Redesign.  Year-long bootcamps empower diverse schools to design site-specific PL models.

  • Site-Level Leads.  District-trained PL leads at each school coach teachers and leaders.

  • Learning Maps.  Teachers create unit "maps" to help students identify their own paths to mastering unit standards.

  • Data-Driven Goals.  Students use formative assessment data to set learning goals and move on once they've mastered them.

  • Learning Modalities.  Students learn and practice applying standards in the ways that work best for them.
