SUPPORTED SCHOOLS IN ADOPTING PERSONALIZED LEARNING THROUGH A "SCHOOL DESIGN LAB"
EDUCATE 78

This non-profit organization is working to transform education in Oakland, CA to improve outcomes for historically underserved students and families. A core strategy is supporting the design of new schools and the redesign of existing schools through its School Design Lab.
Helping schools adopt personalized learning is a key component of Educate78's School Design Lab. Design teams from multiple schools work together to develop practice prototypes or "hacks" that empower students to drive their own learning. They test these hacks with their students, refine them, expand them and ultimately use them as the foundation for their new school models.
Building Blocks Support: We developed and facilitated a customized PL design program for existing schools and new schools participating in the School Design Lab. The program provided a design-thinking process, supported by individualized resources and coaching to meet each school's specific needs and goals.
SAMPLE PL MODELS
-
Strategic Planning. Six-year plan defined PL vision, core practices & cohort rollout plan.
-
School Redesign. Year-long bootcamps empower diverse schools to design site-specific PL models.
-
Site-Level Leads. District-trained PL leads at each school coach teachers and leaders.
-
Melrose Leadership Academy developed "Exito Acelerado," a personalized learning model for Spanish-language middle school math. Students use their quiz results to identify the skills they need to work on most and then choose online instruction, peer tutoring or printed materials to master the skill. Once they demonstrate mastery, they advance to the next skill.
-
Hoover Elementary School developed a personalized learning model to build the capacity of Kindergarten and 1st grade students to exercise agency. Students select fluency activities based on their level and learning preferences. Following each activity, students assess their progress and reflect on their choices.
